Michael O’Hara

Michael researched, organized and led a bilingual Fire Safety and Awareness Workshop as his Eagle Scout project on behalf of the Family Services of Westchester. He drew heavily on practical fire safety information and fire fighting techniques gained as a member of the Scarsdale Volunteer Fire Department's Fire Explorers Program. He also gathered information from several websites and obtained a fire safety checklist for the home from the American Red Cross.
Michael then developed four training modules, in both English and Spanish, covering: (i) family fire escape planning; (ii) home fire prevention tips; (iii) home heating fires; and (iv) carbon monoxide and smoke poisoning. These four training modules and the fire safety checklist formed the basis of the Fire Safety and Awareness Workshop. Michael was assisted in the delivery of his project by fellow scouts and parents of Troop 4, members of the Scarsdale Volunteer Fire Department and Fire Explorers Program, and family members. Through the generous support of the Scarsdale Volunteer Fire Department, he was also able to purchase and distribute 25 combination carbon monoxide and smoke detector alarms to each participating family.
